Driving my car past Metaphor Yarns

Happy Birthday to my nephew Joshua who turns ten years old today! Joshua will be reading his own poems at his school’s Poetry Club program later this week. I look forward to being there and hearing him!

“Whole tilapia” clear-wrapped on a foam tray,

ghoul-mouthed, eye socket gone gray–

Ouiji board of the grocery seafood case.

Month 2:22 (full moon)

At 3 am, sound distills to a feline tongue’s sirp-

lick, sirp-lick, sirp-lick across a fur-coated belly,

a honey-colored thigh, the tiny maraschinos of a paw.

Let that final bell which will toll for me

be a lyric in the key of E, a ringtone

cellular and wile-less, quieted on cue

when the children’s recital begins.

Why can’t politicians stick to the issues

and not trip into the gutter of politics?
