In Honor of September 11, 2001

On this day so fraught with so much pain, I offer these words from the agonizing poem about Sept. 11th, “Out of the Blue” by Simon Armitage:

“We are spinning a web.

Such delicate threads,

the links so brittle,

too little, too late.

Not one can save us

or bear our weight.”

This stunning poem is long,  in several parts. It is devastating to read; but as such, it is adequate to the real tragedy. It is a poem of witness, a touchstone for an era.

  1. Thanks for this, Therese. I must try and read the full piece. I share a surname and a county of birth with Mr Armitage but not his prowess as a poet!
